Most shade sails sold for patios are breathable mesh, but waterproof versions exist too. The two fabrics behave very differently in heat and rain, and the choice changes how you install the sail.
Breathable HDPE Sails
Breathable sails are knitted or woven high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Air passes through the mesh, so hot air does not build up under the sail. Rain passes through as well. Makers including Shade&Beyond, LOVE STORY, SUNNY GUARD and SUNLAX state plainly that their HDPE sails are not waterproof.
Makers list both a UV block figure, often up to 95%, and a lower shade rate. Shade&Beyond, for example, lists 95% UV block and 85% to 88% shade. White and pale colors usually block less light than darker ones; SUNLAX and LOVE STORY both note lower shade rates for white.
Waterproof Sails
Waterproof sails use a tightly woven or coated fabric, typically polyester with a coating, that sheds rain. That makes them useful over furniture or a seating area you want to keep dry. The trade-off is airflow: a solid fabric traps more heat underneath than an open mesh.
Why Slope Matters More for Waterproof Sails
Water that cannot pass through a sail has to run off it. A waterproof sail needs a clear slope toward one corner or edge so rain drains instead of pooling. Pooled water adds weight that stretches fabric and strains anchors. Follow the maker’s guidance on minimum slope and drain direction, and do not let water collect on the sail.
Breathable sails still benefit from a twist or slope, which keeps them taut, but they do not hold standing water the same way.
Wind and Load
A solid fabric catches more wind than a mesh of the same size, which puts more load on its anchors. Whichever fabric you choose, fix the sail to solid structure and lower it before strong wind, heavy rain or snow.
Care
HDPE sails can be hosed down and cleaned with mild soap and water. Coated waterproof fabrics follow their maker’s care instructions, since harsh cleaners can damage a coating. Both last longer if stored clean and dry over winter.
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose breathable HDPE for hot, sunny spaces where airflow matters and rain is not a concern.
- Choose waterproof when you need to keep a seating area or furniture dry, and you can give the sail a proper slope and solid anchors.
