Shade sails collect dust, pollen, leaves and, in shady spots, green growth. Regular cleaning and dry storage over the off-season help the fabric and hardware last longer. Always check the care instructions from your sail’s maker first.

Routine Cleaning

  • Brush off leaves and loose debris.
  • Rinse the sail with a garden hose on a gentle setting.
  • For marks, wash with mild soap and water and a soft brush, then rinse well.
  • Let the sail dry fully, ideally still hung and tensioned, before storing it.

Avoid pressure washers, bleach and harsh solvents unless the maker allows them; they can damage the fabric, its UV stabilizer or a waterproof coating.

Dealing With Mildew and Algae

Sails in damp or shaded spots can turn green over time. Clean them early with mild soap and a soft brush, rinse thoroughly and let them dry in the sun. If marks remain, check the maker’s guidance before trying a stronger cleaner.

Check the Hardware

Each time you clean the sail, look over the D-rings, stitching at the corners, turnbuckles, hooks and anchors. Tighten loose turnbuckles, replace worn rope or corroded parts, and stop using any anchor that has moved. Near salt air, rinse stainless hardware too.

Taking the Sail Down

Shade&Beyond advises removing its sails in severe weather, and snow load in particular can strain anchors. Many owners take sails down for winter. Release tension evenly at the turnbuckles before unclipping the corners, so no single corner takes a sudden load.

Storing the Sail

  • Store the sail only when it is clean and completely dry.
  • Fold or loosely roll it, avoiding sharp creases at the corners.
  • Keep it in a breathable bag or bin in a cool, dry place away from rodents.
  • Store hardware separately, cleaned and dry, so parts are ready for spring.

Re-Hanging in Spring

Inspect the fabric and stitching before you re-hang. Re-check every anchor point, especially posts that may have shifted over winter, and tension the sail evenly. Check it again after the first few days.
